This season isn't a snap for Raiders

Receiver Jacoby Ford will have surgery, andá Oakland needs to deal with long snapping problems.

Jacoby Ford

Dennis Allen has a lot more to deal with than just a loss in his debut as Oakland Raiders coach.

Big-play receiver Jacoby Ford will undergo surgery on his injured left foot and miss significant time, and the Raiders must find a contingency at long snapper after a concussion to Pro Bowler Jon Condo played a major role in the team's 22-14 loss to San Diego on Monday night.

Backup long snapper Travis Goethel rolled two snaps back to punter Shane Lechler, who couldn't get a kick off on either try. Lechler also had a punt blocked after lining up closer to the line of scrimmage than usual. The three miscues led to three field goals for San Diego and left Allen lamenting that he didn't give Goethel more work in practice at long snapping.

Goethel hadn't snapped in a game since high school and got only limited work before practices before being thrown into a game on national television.

"That falls on me," Allen said. "I've got to do a better job of making sure we're prepared for all those different situations. We practiced Travis snapping the ball, but we could have probably done a better job of putting him in more live-type situations and giving him the opportunity to do it, kind of representing what he would do in a regular game."

Condo will have to be cleared medically before he can return for practice this week and Allen said the team will have a contingency plan in place if he can't play Sunday at Miami.

Ford hurt his foot Aug. 17 in an exhibition game against Arizona. He missed six games with the same injury last season and now is dealing with the same problem again.

Bounty meeting

Commissioner Roger Goodell has agreed to meet with four players whose suspensions in connection with the bounty investigation were recently lifted by an appeals panel.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday no specific dates have been set for the meetings.

Goodell is reconsidering whether to hand down revised suspensions to New Orleans Saintslinebacker Jon Vilma, Saints defensive end Will SmithCleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujitaand free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove.

Fujita is now back on Cleveland's 53-man roster, which had an opening when cornerback Joe Hadenwas suspended four games Monday for failing a drug test.

Harrison back?

Injured Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison worked out Monday and Coach Mike Tomlin says there's a chance the four-time Pro Bowler could play in Sunday's home opener against the New York Jets.

Harrison sat out the entire preseason while nursing a left knee injury. He underwent a minor procedure on the knee last month and didn't play in a 31-19 season-opening loss at Denver.

Tomlin says Tuesday the team will monitor Harrison's progress throughout the week. The Steelers do expect to have safety Ryan Clark back. Clark sat out the Broncos' game as a precaution due to a sickle cell trait that makes it dangerous for him to exert himself at high altitude.

Modell funeral

Thousands of family and friends turned out Tuesday in Baltimore for the funeral of former Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell, including current and former players, Goodell and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

An important figure in the development of the league, Modell also was one of the NFL's most polarizing owners. Cleveland fans never forgave him from moving his club to Baltimore for financial reasons after the 1995 season, but Ravens fans were fond of him and Modell also was remembered as a loving family man on Tuesday.

Ray LewisRay RiceJoe FlaccoHaloti Ngata and Torrey Smith were among current Ravens players who attended the service at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation.

"He contributed so much to the NFL," Goodell said. "He was obviously a close adviser to [former commissioner] Pete Rozelle. He was a big part of NFL history. He played a big role in the NFL and the NFL is going to miss him."

Etc.

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived linebacker Cameron Sheffield to make roster space for linebacker Tamba Hali, who was suspended for Week 1 for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. ... Former Pro Bowl center Dan Koppen, who spent nine seasons snapping the ball to Tom Brady in New England, will now have the chance to work with Peyton Manning. Koppen signed with the Broncos on Tuesday, two weeks after his release from the New England Patriots, where he played from 2003-11. Koppen adds depth to the interior line and might push starting center J.D. Walton for playing time. ... The Washington Redskins have signed long snapper Justin Snow to replace Nick Sundberg, who was put on injured reserve. Snow spent the past 12 seasons with theIndianapolis Colts. Sundberg broke his left arm in the first half of Sunday's win over the New Orleans Saints. ... The Cowboys released tight end Colin Cochart, 10 days after they had claimed him off waivers from Cincinnati.
